Password Policies

Password policies define the rules to set up passwords used to log into a AlertBoot-protected system. Policy rules specify combinations of characters and letters that can and cannot be used to create a password for a user. Rules also specify length, life, and other details for the password.

NOTE: If password rules have been defined in the User/Machine Setup Password Policies screen, do not define password policies in network’s Active Directory infrastructure.

To specify password policies for users in an AlertBoot-protected system:

  1. Click Users/Machines on the AlertBoot home page.

  1. Click Setup on the left navigation panel of the Users/Machines page, and click Password Policies option under Setup.

The Password Policy screen is displayed.

You can define specifications for the passwords you provide to the end user to log into the system.

  1.  Disable the password policy?: Check this option to disable password policies for all of your AlertBoot protected machines.

  1. Minimum Password Length: Enter a value for the minimum length of the user password. If a user specifies a password lesser than this value,  the password is not accepted and an error will be displayed.

  1. Minimum Number of Letters: Enter a value for the minimum number of characters that can be used in creating the user password. If a user specifies a password using lesser number of letters than this value,  the password is not accepted and an error will be displayed.

Select No to allow consecutive alpha-numeric characters in password creation.

  4. Keyboard Column Forbidden: Select Yes if you do not want to allow the user to enter vertically consecutive alpha-numeric characters (that is, entering characters as found in a vertical column of the keyboard, such as "xsw1" or "mko0") during password creation.

Select No to allow vertically consecutive alpha-numeric characters in password creation.

  5. 3 or More Consecutive Characters Forbidden: Select Yes if you do not want to allow the use of 3 or more consecutive alpha-numeric characters in sequential order, whether ascending or descending. For example, this will disallow the use of "123", or "321", and "abc", or "cba" in the password.

Select No to allow 3 or more consecutive alpha-numeric characters in the password.

  6. User Name as Password Forbidden: Select Yes if you do not want to allow the user name to be used as the password. Select No to allow the use of user name as the password.
